The mitochondrial-derived peptide MOTS-c has been found to promote metabolic homeostasis and reduce obesity and insulin resistance. Effects of MDPs on mitochondrial and cellular health in AMD have been studied, with MOTS-c appearing to be a novel regulator of muscle and fat metabolism. Mitochondrial peptides are down regulated in diabetes subjects, but the role of MOTS-c in diabetes has yet to be determined.
