Quercetin and Vitamin C: An Experimental, Synergistic Therapy for the Prevention and Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 Related Disease (COVID-19)
Quercetin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can modulate the activity of various enzymes involved in the degradation of phospholipids. This affects free radical processes and the biosynthesis of nitric oxide, proteinases, and others. Quercetin also exhibits immunomodulating properties and can reduce the production of cytotoxic superoxidanion. By inhibiting the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines of interleukins (IL) -1β and -8, it helps to reduce the volume of necrotic myocardium and enhance reparative processes. The drug also restores regional blood circulation and microcirculation without noticeable changes in vascular tone, increasing the reactivity of microvessels.
