It has a number of physiological and pharmacological effects, including lowering cholesterol levels, improving liver function, and suppressing inflammation. Ursodeoxycholic acid is used to dissolve certain types of gallstones, to prevent formation of gallstones, and to treat a certain type of liver disease called primary biliary cirrhosis.
