Description
Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a hydrophilic bile acid which is distributed in bile and is known to be a cholesterol solubilizing and membrane-stabilizing agent. It has a number of physiological and pharmacological effects, including lowering cholesterol levels, improving liver function, and suppressing inflammation. Ursodeoxycholic acid is used to dissolve certain types of gallstones, to prevent formation of gallstones, and to treat a certain type of liver disease called primary biliary cirrhosis. Ursodeoxycholic acid may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
