Lifstatin is a protein naturally found in the body and it is actually a Follistatin-like protein. It is a member of the TGF-B superfamily of proteins. It is a competitive inhibitor of myostatin, a negative regulator of muscle mass. Lifstatin levels are up-regulated by resistance exercise and it may play an important role as a mediator of skeletal muscle hypertrophy. It is likely that the levels of myostatin are higher in the muscles of people with COPD.
